Barnsley boss Andy Ritchie has refuted claims that he had a bid for Rotherham United midfielder Lee Williamson rejected.
Reports suggested that the Championship new boys had a £150,000 offer turned down by the Millmoor outfit, but the Tykes' manager insists that the process was never that formal.
"We have not made an offer at all," Ritchie told the club's official website.
"We made an enquiry a couple of weeks ago and we were interested, but I have not spoken to anyone about any offer.
"I do not know where these things come from."
Financial pressures mean that The Millers would not be unlikely to reject a substantial bid for the promising 24-year-old, but are holding out for a great deal more for the man who was a mainstay in last season's campaign.
Meanwhile, Williamson remains at United and they play Stockbridge PS on Monday before Sunderland head to the South Yorkshire on Wednesday.
