The two clubs meet in the quarter-finals at Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening and the visitors could be bottom of the Championship by the time the game kicks off.
But Harewood is not short on confidence and hopes for another day to remember, having scored the winner for West Ham United in their semi-final win over Middlesbrough in 2006.
He said in the Daily Mirror: "I've had some amazing times in the FA Cup, and the one that sticks in my mind is that semi-final... the build-up to that game and then to get the winner.
"The place erupted and I will never forget that feeling.
"In my career, that was the best moment. West Ham were doing so well and we had such a good team and team spirit."
Defending Premier League champions City will also need to beware of an attacking performance from Barnsley, according to Harewood.
"We will go at them," he said.
"We can beat them if we are on top of what we are trying to achieve. Manchester City are a world-class team but they are going to know we have played them.
"At the end I think they are going to be respecting us more than we are respecting them."
