The former Scunthorpe United defender has damaged knee ligaments and could be out from anywhere to two to six weeks with the Kingston Communications Stadium outfit.
Dawson is to have a scan to assess the extent of the injury he suffered after making a routine tackle in a pre-season friendly against non-league Canvey Island on Friday.
The 24-year-old will miss the rest of pre-season preparations with The Tigers and Taylor admits he may have to reassess his plans following the injury to his starting left back.
"Andy's injury is the only negative from the last few days because everything has been going so well," Taylor told the Hull Daily Mail.
"It is a blow. He's going to get a scan but it's not looking too good and it could be anything from two to six weeks.
"It will definitely put him out of the next three or four friendlies and obviously he's going to miss a lot of work so he's got to be doubtful for the start of the season. We've got to be realistic about the situation.
"He was just settling in. He's done outstandingly well. I knew he was a good player but he's even better than what I thought.
"We'll just keep our fingers crossed and hope it's not too bad.
"We do have other options for left back and it could be we'll have to have a look at them."
