The Tigers got off to an excellent start when Ben Burgess headed Stuart Green's corner home put his side a goal up inside the first quarter of an hour.
The match then turned following the break as Will McDonagh equalised for The Cumbrians just before the hour mark, when he drilled a shot past Tigers goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite.
However, Paul Simpson's side were then reduced to ten men as Lee Andrews was sent off for a professional foul on Burgess two minutes after Carlisle pulled level.
The man advantage seemed to spur Peter Taylor's side on and substitute Jamie Forrester (pictured) scored the eventual winner for Hull with a quarter of an hour remaining.
The Cumbrians were then reduced to nine men as Richie Foran was also red carded in the dying stages of the match.
The result takes Hull four points clear of Mansfield Town, Swansea City and Oxford United in the Third Division table while Carlisle stay bottom, having had four players receive bookings in the match on Sunday.
