The Cumbrians, who are struggling again in the league, secured a very good 2-0 success over Huddersfield Town at Brunton Park.
Everton loan star Stephen Schumacher bagged the first after seven minutes before Brian Wake (15) added the second.
Blackpool sealed their passage into the next round with a 1-0 win over high-flying Doncaster Rovers - veteran Mike Sheron sealed the win just seven minutes from time.
Scunthorpe United upset local rivals Hull City with a 3-1 win at The KC Stadium.
Stephen Torpey opened the scoring after 14 minutes, but Daniel Webb levelled just after the hour mark.
Matthew Sparrow (80) and Steve McLean (90) grabbed two late goals to send Brian Laws's side through.
Lincoln City won through against Chesterfield at Sincil Bank with a 4-3 Silver Goal victory.
Gary Fletcher gave Lincoln the lead in the first minute, but Chris Brandon (34) levelled for the visitors.
Simon Yeo gave The Red Imps the lead just after half time, only for Paul Warhurst to level.
Paul Mayo (pictured) then put Lincoln ahead again just five minutes from time - but Brandon grabbed another to send the game into extra time.
This time Lincoln were not to be denied and Fletcher scored five minutes into added time.
Halifax Town earned a 1-0 win at Scarborough, with Craig Midgley's 64th minute penalty the difference between the two sides.
