The England Under-21 international was the subject of some tabloid speculation recently, which suggested that he was unhappy with the terms on offer and would snub the opportunity to sign a new deal.
However, Peter Ridsdale soon put the record straight, and the Leeds chairman was delighted to confirm Smith's signature was on the contract on Wednesday.
"We are delighted that Alan has committed his long term future to the club," he told the official Leeds website.
"This emphasises our determination to look after, and reward, the home-grown players we have developed here, and we are delighted that Alan has put pen-to-paper.
"Alan has a vital part to play in Leeds' long-term future."
United ave also received a second contractual boost with the news that defender Alan Maybury has signed a 12-month extension to his present deal, which was due to expire in the summer.
