The Robins manager has drawn up a list of possible targets as short-term replacements while Murray recovers from his eye-socket injury he suffered during City's 3-0 home win over Oldham on Saturday.
Wilson's list is reported to include Blackburn's out-of-favour midfielder Damien Johnson among the possible candidates.
The 28-year-old Ainsworth cost The Dons £2million when he signed from Part Vale in November 1998.
However, like Johnson at Blackburn, Ainsworth has fallen out of favour with Wimbledon boss Terry Burton in the first team and has his contract up in the summer.
While at Vale Park, the speedy winger was courted by Premiership giants Leeds United, who put in a £1.5 million bid to The Valiants for his services, but the club rejected the bid and instead sold him to Selhurst Park.
Wilson hopes to have a signing in place at Ashton Gate by next week, as City look to push Reading and Brighton for automatic promotion from Division Two.
