Venables moved swiftly to make Barmby his first signing at Elland Road, and was rewarded when the player opened his account on his full league debut against Manchester City.
However, O'Leary, speaking in the Sunday People, believes that Barmby will fade despite his good start.
"I liked him [Barmby] and could have signed him for Leeds," admitted O'Leary.
"But I asked one question. Why, after Liverpool took so much trouble and spent so much money signing him from Everton were they so keen to sell at less than half the price two years later?
"Nick, I'm afraid, seems to start well and then fade rapidly at clubs - which might explain why he's had so many, so early in his career.
"And how will he cope if things turn against him and he's left out of the team?"
O'Leary did have one positive not about the player however, adding: "One thing is for sure, Terry Venables should know how to get the best out of him."
Meanwhile a player linked with a move away from Elland Road is veteran midfielder David Batty.
Batty who has been an influential figure in two spells at Leeds has reportedly fallen out of favour under Venables, and may be sold to raise money.
