The England international struck 13 minutes from time to earn them a draw on the night after the home side had threatened to cause a major upset.
The home side stunned Leeds taking the lead and levelling the aggregate score after 24 minutes through Irakli Modebadze.
Brazilian winger Fabio Vasconcelos was the creator of the goal cutting inside from the right and curling a superb shot from the edge of the box which thudded off the angle of bar and post.
Modebadze reacted quickest to the loose ball and he sent a looping header over Paul Robinson to send the home crowd into raptures.
Leeds came close to drawing level just two minutes when home goalkeeper Andriy Gluschenko produced a brilliant save to stop Dominic Matteo's close-range shot after Ian Harte had flicked on Barmby's corner.
Leeds came out in the second half in a more determined fashion after a half time roasting from Venables, but still failed to create any real clear goalscoring opportunities as the home side were content to sit back and hit on the counter attack.
The Ukrainian's came within inches of doubling their lead in the 73rd minute when Akopyan's 25 yard free kick struck the outside of Robinson's post.
Four minutes later Leeds found the crucial goal to restore their aggregate lead through Barmby.
The former Liverpool man was on hand at the back post four yards out to tap in after Alan Smith had headed Harry Kewell's cross towards goal.
Any hopes the home side had of turning round the overall deficit went up in smoke when Uros Milosavljevic was sent-off ten minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
