The 34-year-old former Leicester City man is currently searching for a team after being released by The Foxes at the end of last season.
Hignett is vastly experienced, having played for the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Barnsley, Middlesbrough and Aberdeen during his career.
Whites' boss Kevin Blackwell is more than happy for the Whiston-born ace to train with the side as it enables him to run the rule on Hignett's fitness before deciding whether to offer a deal.
"Craig rang me and asked if he could train with me at the club," explained Blackwell. "He had a couple of offers elsewhere but said he would like to give it a go here.
"I could not promise him anything but I agreed to let him train with us for six weeks pre-season training, I am fine with that because I still need more options and if he can offer us one of them then that's great.
"I want to be able to look at the bench this year and know I can change games. That was a luxury that wasn't afforded to Peter Reid or Eddie Gray last year and many times you'd look at the bench and there was no option to change it. This year I am determined to make sure I have the option to change things."
Meanwhile, Blackwell has confirmed the club's interest in Everton's out of contract keeper Steve Simonsen, as the club looks to bring in cover for England Under-21 ace Scott Carson.
"Steve Simonsen is one of three or four keepers that I am actually speaking to at the moment," added Blackwell.
In other news, the Elland Road outfit are being linked with a move for former star striker Brian Deane along with Swindon Town's Sam Parkin, who scored 20 league goal last term.
