Leeds boss Neil Warnock is hoping El Hadji Diouf can be his wildcard this season as contract talks with the forward continue.
Diouf is at Elland Road on a non-contract basis and featured in the 4-0 win over Shrewsbury on Saturday in the Capital One Cup.
Warnock is keen for the Senegal international to sign a deal as he feels the former Liverpool man can add something different to the squad.
Asked if Diouf would be a wildcard for Leeds, Warnock told the
Yorkshire Evening Post: "Yes, he's always been like that.
"But he works hard too and he doesn't give the ball away. When we get him a little bit fitter he can do a job for us.
"He's on non-contract terms and I asked him to do that to be involved on Saturday while I had a good look at him.
"He trained Thursday, Friday and he's in this week. I'll make a decision before the weekend because I'll want him involved against Wolves (on Saturday) if that's the case.
"We'll have a chat and see what happens. He won't be retiring on the wage we give him."
Contract talks
Warnock is also hoping contract negotiations with striker Ross McCormack will be resolved before the weekend.
The Scottish striker's deal at Leeds expires next summer and he has been unwilling to pen a new contract.
"I'd like that resolved before Wolves too," added Warnock.
"I'd have liked it resolved last week if I'm honest because we're thin on the ground.
"But I was a lot happier talking to him on Saturday and he seems happier too. I'm not saying it will definitely happen but we're optimistic."
