Mansfield Town edged a five-goal thriller at home to Macclesfield Town, while the ten-man Torquay United beat nine-man Leyton Orient in an ill-tempered encounter and Yeovil Town got back onto winning ways with a 2-0 win over high-flying Swansea City in an early kick-off at Huish Park.
Steve Basham grabbed his fifth goal in an impressive start to the season when he opened the scoring at The Kassam Stadium against The Shrimpers, and Paul Wanless sealed the points with his 47th minute penalty to send The U's two points clear of The Swans at the top of the table.
York were stunned early on at Bootham Crescent, as visiting Rochdale took a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes through goals from Kevin Towson and Leo Burtos.
The home side's Stuart Wise and Dale's Paul Connor were then dismissed on 70 minutes as York fell to defeat, despite Aaron Wilford pulling a goal back after 73 minutes.
An eventful game at Field Mill saw David Artell give The Stags a 7th minute lead before Matthew Tipton and John Miles gave Macclesfield a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Junior Mendes restored parity on the 52 minute mark and Liam Lawrence's 69th minute penalty handed three points to Keith Curle's side, with a thrilling 3-2 win.
Gary Alexander and Craig Taylor were sent off in the game at Plainmoor as both The Gulls and Leyton Orient found themselves with ten men each after just 11 minutes.
David Graham then grabbed a brace for the hosts and although Tom Newey pulled one back for Orient, Matt Lockwood's dismissal signalled the end for the visitors, as Leroy Rosenior's men recorded the win.
Yeovil Town bounced back to winning ways in Division Three with a 2-0 win at home to Swansea City on Saturday lunchtime.
The Glovers had lost their last three games on the bounce after an encouraging start to the season, and boss Gary Johnson was looking for a change in fortunes.
Adam Stansfield gave the home side the lead with his 39th minute header and Kirk Jackson sealed the points for Yeovil ten minutes after the restart.
The result keeps Yeovil in touch with the early promotion chasers in the table while the Welsh outfit are still pushing for the lead.
Huddersfield Town fought back from a goal down as Paul Scott's strike levelled matters at Gigg Lane after Danny Swailes had put Bury ahead.
However, The Terriers slipped to a 2-1 defeat as Efe Sodje received his marching orders and Lee Connell popped up with the winner for Andy Preece's men.
Bristol Rovers continued their positive start to the season as they occupy a play-off spot early on in the season - courtesy of a Lee Hodges strike earning a 1-0 win at home to Kidderminster Harriers.
A Barry Conlon double was enough for Darlington to beat basement side Carlisle United 2-0 at The Reynolds Arena.
Boston United and Scunthorpe United played out a 1-1 draw at York Street as Kevin Sharp's penalty cancelled out Lee Beevers's opener.
