Arron Davies opened the scoring for The Glovers after 12 minutes and their lead was doubled before half time thanks to a penalty from the prolific Phil Jevons (32).
The home side finished the game with ten men after Darren Edmondson was dismissed late on.
Second placed Scunthorpe United kept up the pressure after 1-0 win over Leyton Orient at Glanford Park.
Andy Keogh grabbed the only goal of the game after 68 minutes and The Iron's cause was helped late on when Orient's Gary Alexander was dismissed.
Swansea lost pace with the top two after they were held to a goalless draw at Grimsby.
Macclesfield moved level with Swansea, after they won 3-0 at home to Rochdale with Matthew Tipton helping himself to a hat-trick.
