U's sign Bramble

Cambridge United have signed Southend United striker Tesfaye Bramble on loan.

Cambridge United have signed Southend United striker Tesfaye Bramble on loan for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old joins the League Two bottom club at his own request after falling down the attacking pecking order at Roots Hall.

The fine form of Freddy Eastwood, Wayne Gray and Lawrie Dudfield has meant that Bramble has had to settle for a substitute's role with The Shrimpers in recent weeks.

U's boss Steve Thompson was keen to bring in a striker and the inclusion of Bramble is sure to be a timely boost, with the Abbey Stadium club six points adrift of safety at the foot of The Football League.

The former Cambridge City striker's move is followed by the news that current loanee Tom Newey is set to sign a permanent deal with The U's until the season's end.

The former Leeds United trainee has been on loan at Cambridge from League Two rivals Leyton Orient, having arrived back in January.

The 22-year-old is due to play against his former club on Saturday, when Cambridge visit Brisbane Road to face Orient.
