Leaders Southend beat Scunthorpe 3-0, while Huddersfield lost 3-1 at Hartlepool.
League One leaders Southend are now nine-points clear of third place Huddersfield following a 3-0 win over Scunthorpe, while The Terriers slipped up 3-1 at Hartlepool.
Freddy Eastwood set Southend on their way with his 16th goal of the season after beating visiting goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite from 20 yards in the seventh minute.
Nine minutes after half time former Portsmouth and Manchester City striker Lee Bradbury notched his first goal for the club when, from close range, he converted a header from Efetobore Sodje.
Another former City ace Shaun Goater made sure of the win a quarter of an hour from time when he applied the finishing touch to a cross from Mark Bower.
While The Shrimpers were comfortably disposing of Scunthorpe, Peter Jackson's Huddersfield lost ground on their rivals at Victoria Park.
Adam Boyd finished well in the 10th minute to give the strugglers the lead but when David Graham cut inside and struck a left foot shot into the far corner Pools supporters may have feared the worst.
Those fears were allayed, however, by first goals of the season from Michael Maidens and Joel Porter.
First, the 19-year-old Maidens struck in the 53rd minute and then Porter, making his first appearance since Hartlepool's play-off final defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last May, rounded off the win by volleying home Chris Llewellyn's cross.
The win sees Hartlepool rise three places to 17th and eases the hosts' relegation fears.
Elsewhere, Bristol City's revival continued with a hard-fought 1-0 win at bottom club Milton Keynes Dons.
The match was ultimately settled by Steve Brooker's fourth minute cross shot.
However, the hosts were desperately unfortunate not to claim a point when Ben Harding's shot rebounded off a post in the dying seconds of the match.
