Mariners hire Lawson

Grimsby have signed Southend striker James Lawson on a one-month loan deal.

The 19-year-old only signed his first professional contract a year ago, but was quick to make an impression and even attracted interest from Premiership clubs last season.

However, Lawson has not been able to establish himself in the Southend side this term and Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson has decided he needs to get some games under his belt elsewhere.

"Lawson's first team action has been limited this season so this loan move will be good for him and us," Tilson told Southend's official website.

"Going to Grimsby will toughen him up and also give him the football he needs."

Grimsby boss Graham Rodger has only two fit strikers available and gratefully accepted Lawson to provide extra cover.

Lawson will go straight into the squad for Saturday's League Two clash against Stockport.
