Midfielder considers future after Southend exit

Kevin Maher is weighing up a move to Gillingham having been released by Southend. The 31-year-old midfielder was handed a free transfer at the end of the season after over a decade at Roots Hall. Maher is well acquainted with Gillingham having spent a loan spell there at the close of the past campaign and was impressed with Gills boss Mark Stimson. "Gillingham is definitely an option," Maher told Kent Online. "I've got a lot of respect for the manager and enjoy working with him. "I know that one or two clubs are interested in me but there is nothing definite and I'm just waiting to see what offers do come in. "It's a busy time of year and after being at a club for 10 years it's quite strange. I'm going to take my time."

Compensation

One man who looks destined to leave Gillingham is veteran defender Efe Sodje. The well travelled Nigerian has been told he has no future at the club but is refusing to leave until a compensation package has been formulated. "The manager has made his feelings quite clear," Sodje told the Bury Times. "Pretty much from the day he came to the club, he told me I would never play for Gillingham while he was in charge. "I have tried to continue professionally and I have never once asked to leave. As far as I am concerned, I am still a Gillingham player. "Obviously, if you are not in the manager's plans, then it is time to leave. If they want me to go, then they know what to do. If they come up with a package, I will go."
