Peter Clarke insists he could stay at Southend United after revealing his surprise at claims he had turned down the chance to discuss a new deal.
The defender is out of contract in the summer and Shrimpers chairman Ron Martin last week revealed that the influential 27-year-old had rejected the opportunity to open talks over an extension.
However, Clarke has been left disappointed by Martin's comments and is unsure whether he now has a long-term future at Roots Hall.
"I've never asked to leave Southend and I've certainly not ruled out staying," Clarke told the Southend Echo.
"I saw what the chairman said about the situation and it was quite surprising and disappointing too if I'm honest.
"I was supposed to have rejected the opportunity for talks, but as far as I was aware we were going to have them when the football was finished at the end of the season.
"I thought we were going to sit down after our final two games and go from there, but I don't know whether that's changed now."
