Leon Barnett admits Mike Newell's sacking as Luton boss has come as 'a shock'.
Leon Barnett has revealed Mike Newell's sacking as Luton Town boss has come as 'a shock'.
Newell was dismissed by the Championship strugglers on Thursday after The Hatters lost five games in a row.
Young defender Barnett was surprised to learn of the sacking and is disappointed that Newell has left Kenilworth Road.
"It comes as a shock really that he's been sacked," Barnett told Sky Sports News.
"He gave me my first chance and I've done well so far and got the games in, so someone else might change it around.
"It's hard to take it in all at once."
Barnett, who expects Brian Stein to take charge of the team for Saturday's game with Ipswich Town, feels the board have made a mistake in getting rid of Newell.
He added: "I think this might even be able to make us work harder, even though he's gone.
"We can prove everybody wrong, and that he is a good manager and we need him back.
"I don't think the board realise how much we need him at the moment, but we have to get on and deal with it.
"We've got to keep going."
