Luke Rooney has completed his move from Gillingham to Swindon after agreeing personal terms with the Wiltshire club.
The League Two promotion rivals agreed an undisclosed fee for the 21-year-old on Monday, with the winger subsequently travelling to the County Ground to thrash out a two-and-a-half-year contract. Rooney is now set to make his Robins debut in Saturday's encounter with Macclesfield, while he will come head-to-head with his former employers at Priestfield in a potential promotion showdown on April 21. The Academy graduate, out of contract at Gillingham at the end of the season, turned down the offer of a new deal in November, with manager Andy Hessenthaler subsequently leaving him out of first-team affairs. Gills reopened talks with Rooney in December, shortly after Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio first expressed his interest, with Hessenthaler hopeful a new deal could be agreed. But that has not proved the case. Rooney, who would have commanded a compensation fee in the summer as he is under 24 years of age, made three substitute appearances for Gillingham since first being axed in mid-November - taking his total to 61 appearances for the club during which time he scored six goals.
