Oxford United have signed defender Curtis Nelson from Plymouth Argyle on a two-year contract.

The 23-year-old centre-back left the Pilgrims after failing to agree a new deal, although Plymouth will be entitled to compensation for a player who made 247 appearances for the club and captained the team.

Nelson's deal at the Kassam Stadium also has an option of a one-year extension.

United head coach Michael Appleton told his club's official website: "He's a good player and another who has played a lot of games for his age.

"He is a great competitor and a good organiser and I think a lot of Oxford fans will have been impressed when he played against us over the last couple of seasons.

"Plymouth were hoping to keep him but as soon as we found out that he wasn't going to accept their offer we were keen to get him to Oxford.

"We are delighted that he has opted to join us ahead of the new season."

Nelson added: "Oxford were one of the outstanding teams we played last season and when I met Michael Appleton and heard the plans they have I knew this was where I wanted to play my football.

"The fans are great and it is a very positive place to be right now. I'm looking forward to working hard in pre-season and having a chance to help the team in League One this season."
