Ched Evans is unlikely to play for Chesterfield against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend over fears a hate mob will target the game, Sky Sports News HQ understands.
The Spireites signed striker Evans on a one-year contract last month, with his previous club being Sheffield United.
Chesterfield are due to host the Owls - the cross-city rivals of Evans' former club - at the Proact Stadium on Saturday.
The former Wales international is due to be tried for rape in Cardiff in October and it is understood there are concerns that a hostile environment could develop if Evans features in the friendly.
It appears more likely he will turn out when Chesterfield play Matlock Town on Tuesday.
Evans, whose deal has the option for a further year, said when he signed in June: "I am very excited and privileged to be resuming my career at Chesterfield.
"I hope to make a valuable contribution both on and off the pitch for the football club, the fans and the community."
