Steven Gerrard has emerged as a contender for the vacant MK Dons managerial role, Sky sources understand.

Gerrard has brought his time in Major League Soccer to an end and is returning to England to start the next chapter in his career.

The Liverpool great, who spent two seasons with Los Angeles Galaxy, has been linked with a coaching return at Anfield and a possible playing reunion with Celtic, where his former boss Brendan Rodgers is in charge.

Gerrard is working towards a UEFA 'A' coaching licence and is understood to have had preliminary talks with the club owned by Pete Winkelman.

MK Dons have struggled this season in Sky Bet League One and parted company with manager Karl Robinson last month.

They sit in 21st place heading into a clash with Bristol Rovers on Saturday and have not won in the league since beating fellow strugglers Oldham on October 1.

Interim boss Richie Barker will remain at the helm for the Memorial Stadium clash with no appointment believed to be close.
