New Chesterfield manager Gary Caldwell tells Sky Sports News HQ why he's joined the League One strugglers

Chesterfield have appointed former Wigan boss Gary Caldwell as their new manager.

The 34-year-old Scot succeeds Danny Wilson, who was sacked on January 8 following a miserable run of 13 defeats in 18 Sky Bet League One matches which left the Spireites in the relegation zone.

Sky sources understand that Tony Mowbray and Neil Redfearn were also in the running for the post but the club wanted to go for a younger manager with new ideas.

Club director Ashley Carson said: "We set out to appoint somebody young, enthusiastic, ambitious, who finished their football career not so long ago and could bring ideas to the club. Gary more than fits this bill."

Ritchie Humphreys, the current PFA chairman, oversaw the 4-0 defeat at Luton in the EFL Trophy and Saturday's 1-0 league victory over fellow strugglers Coventry, but Caldwell now takes charge ahead of the visit of AFC Wimbledon at the weekend.

Caldwell said: "I would not have taken this role if I didn't believe we could get out of the situation we are in and look to achieve more success next season.

"I don't look back in life. I think I'm a better manager now for my 18 months at Wigan. The decision was made and I'm a better manager for the experience I had there."

Wigan was Caldwell's first managerial role. The former Latics captain, who made 111 appearances for the club as a player and lifted the FA Cup in 2013, replaced Malky Mackay with the team eight points adrift of safety in the Championship with five games remaining of the 2014-15 season.

He was unable to save Wigan from relegation but led them on a 20-match unbeaten run in his first full season in charge to help the club back into the second tier at the first attempt as League One champions.

However, following just two wins in the first 14 Championship games this season Caldwell was sacked in October.

He was interviewed for the Charlton job the following month as he sought a quick return to management but the Addicks opted for the more experienced Karl Robinson, following his achievements at MK Dons.
