Sky Sports News understands Wright met with manager Phil Brown on Tuesday, with talks believed to have gone well.

Wright scored 14 times in all competitions for Gillingham last season after being deployed in an attacking midfield role for the first time in his career.

It's understood that a fallout between Wright and manager Adrian Pennock led the 27-year-old to ask for his contract to be terminated at the League One club.

Pennock left Wright out of his matchday squad for the 3-3 draw against Southend in August, with the player later denying claims he had refused to take his place on the bench.

"It's not for me to go into it right now but just remember always two sides to stories etc but yes I was fit and available today that's it," Wright said on Twitter.

"As said I can't say much but all I will say is I DID NOT REFUSE TO BE ON THE BENCH."

Wright, who has made 119 appearances for Charlton, Scunthorpe and Millwall, had 11 months remaining on his contract at Gillingham.
