Oldham striker Lee Hughes is to go under the surgeon's knife on Thursday and is expected to be sidelined for three months.
The 31-year-old requires an operation on his adductor tendon and it is expected to be an arduous road back to full fitness.
In his first season at Boundary Park, Hughes has impressed when fit in scoring eight goals but has been persistently plagued by groin injuries.
Hughes has made 21 appearances for the League One club in total, with Oldham boss John Sheridan having spoken of what has been a nightmare campaign in terms of injuries.
Sheridan has seen his ranks decimated all term by injuries to key men and is firmly of the opinion Oldham would be much higher up the table had luck been on their side.
Ill-fortune
He told the club's
official website: "We've had injuries all season to key players like Sean Gregan, Andy Liddell and Lee Hughes. If I'd had those players on the pitch we would have been a lot stronger this season, for sure.
"But I try to concentrate on who we've got in the team, and those lads have shown great character because the majority of them are only young.
"To be where we are in the league with the injuries we've had I think is remarkable, and that's full credit to the lads who have shown lots of desire and effort."
