Walsall claimed their third successive victory while handing Carlisle their third defeat in a row with a 2-1 win at the Banks's stadium.
A missed penalty was the turning point of the game when Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince was ruled to have brought down Danny Carlton in the 10th minute.
Carlisle striker Danny Graham fired the spot-kick low and hard but Trinidad and Tobago international Ince redeemed himself by diving to his right to pull off a fine save.
Ince saved Walsall with further blocks from Simon Hackney and Carlton before the home side took the lead a minute before half-time, Dwayne Mattis heading in an Alex Nicholls cross.
Walsall increased their lead after 64 minutes, Jabo Ibehre firing in his third of the season with a low shot on the turn.
Although Marc Bridge-Wilkinson pulled one back for Carlisle in the 82nd minute with another penalty after Anthony Gerrard tripped Jennison Myrie-Williams, it was too late to deny the home side all three points.
