Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott wants a quick decision on Cleveland Taylor's future, but hopes the winger stays with the club.
Taylor handed in a transfer request in early June and cited personal reasons for his desire to leave Brunton Park.
The Cumbrians are reported to want at least the £65,000 paid to Scunthorpe for Taylor 18 months ago, but have yet to receive any offers.
The player has been involved in the club's pre-season campaign and Abbott would welcome the opportunity to have Taylor in his squad this term.
"I would be wrong to close the door on someone like Cleveland as he was player of the year last season and he has always been outstanding in the dressing room and on the pitch," Abbott told the News & Star.
"I have tried to persuade him to stay as the issue he has is not with me and there has certainly been no fall-out with the club.
"But persuading people to play football is a dangerous thing because he has to want to play for the club himself.
"In a week he might make a decision about his future, but we need to know soon if we are searching for a new right winger because we have to make plans.
"I would certainly welcome him back as long as his reasons for staying are for the right reasons."
