Brighton stalwart announces his retirement

Brighton stalwart Kerry Mayo has announced his retirement from football due to injury. The 31-year-old defender was released by Seagulls boss Russell Slade at the end of last season after 14 years and more than 300 games for the South Coast side. Mayo was offered a one-year deal by former Brighton boss Micky Adams, who is now in charge at Port Vale, but a groin injury which would need surgery and a lengthy spell of rehabilitation has forced him to call it a day. "To play for your boyhood team is one thing, but to do it for 14 years is an honour," he said. "Every single day has been a delight - even the times when I haven't been in the side or had been injured."
