Veteran striker Darren Byfield has returned to League One Oldham in a bid to find himself a new club.
The 32-year-old has just been released by Championship side Doncaster and is hoping to land a permanent deal with Oldham, where he spent two months on loan last season.
Byfield has been training with the Latics, for whom he scored once in eight appearances last term, and played an hour of Wednesday's friendly with Middlesbrough.
Manager Dave Penney has been pleased with Byfield's contribution so far and will continue to run the rule over the former Aston Villa trainee.
"Darren is without a club and asked if he could come and train with us," he told the Oldham Evening Chronicle. "It is a situation similar to Will Haining, who was with us recently.
"He wasn't down to start but a couple of players were late arriving so he started and he took full advantage.
"It was his first game and he was blowing towards the end, but everybody could see the quality he has. He is still fit, mobile and he knows the game."
Byfield is expected to get another chance to impress in Saturday's friendly at home to Blackpool, another of the 13 clubs he has played for.
