Bury veteran wants to keep focus on playing this season

Bury defender Efe Sodje has ruled out taking a coaching role with the club this season after the departure of manager Alan Knill. Knill has left League Two promotion hopefuls Bury in order to take over as manager of Championship strugglers Scunthorpe United on a rolling contract. However, Sodje has revealed that, although he wants to go into coaching in the future, now is not the time for him to step into the breach. "I do want to go into coaching one day and I'm doing my coaching badges at the moment, but I don't want to go into that world just yet," the 38-year-old told skysports.com. "I still want to keep playing and achieve more things as a player first, so I won't be looking to be part of the coaching team here just yet."

Disappointed

The experienced centre-half was brought to Gigg Lane by Knill in February 2008, initially on loan, and he realises that his former manager's opportunity to test himself at a higher level was too good to refuse. He added: "Obviously I am disappointed to see him go because he brought me here and has done a great job for the club. "In the three years that I have been here we have always been in the race for promotion and he has left us in a great position to go up this season as well. "Every player dreams of playing at a higher level and it is no different for managers, so for him to go and test himself in a higher division was always going to be too good to turn down."
