Port Vale booked their passage into the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Port Vale booked their passage into the third round of the Northern Section of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a penalty shoot-out win over Scunthorpe United.
The two sides could not be separated after 90 minutes of action at Glanford Park, which led to the game heading straight to penalties.
Vale battled hard to take the game to penalties as they played for almost half an hour with ten men following Jason Talbot's dismissal and they held their nerve the better in the shoot-out.
Neither keeper made a save as Vale claimed a 5-3 victory, with Jeff Smith netting the decisive spot kick after Cliff Byrne had crashed his effort against the bar for The Iron.
