Billy Sharp celebrated his 21st birthday by firing Scunthorpe to the top of League One.
Billy Sharp celebrated his 21st birthday by firing Scunthorpe United back to the top of League One with the only goal at home to Bristol City.
The predatory striker turned sharply to score four minutes before half-time to send The Iron back above Oldham Athletic.
City dominated the early exchanges, forcing a string of corners, but almost fell behind when Scunthorpe's Andy Crosby headed wide at the near post.
The decisive goal came on 41 minutes when Jim Goodwin played a quick free-kick into the feet of Sharp, who swivelled and shot beyond Adriano Basso.
Cleveland Taylor's deflected shot then drifted just wide, while in the second half Jermaine Beckford's control let him down at the far post.
Chances were at a premium and City defender Jamie McCombe had to react quickly to clear Taylor's deflected cross off the line.
Kevin Betsy should have equalised on 75 minutes, but he steered Enoch Showunmi's cross wide of the target from close range.
McCombe then saw his header blocked on the line before Sharp missed the chance to score his 22nd goal of the season in injury-time when he volleyed a cross wide at the far post.
