New Saints boss Gordon Strachan was sais to be keen on taking the 23-year-old shot stopper to St Mary's as cover for Welsh international Paul Jones, but Wilson (pictured) denied he had been contacted by Strachan.
"I've had absolutely no contact with Southampton, but you can see why he might turn a few heads because he's a very good keeper who has been very unfortunate to be kept out of the side," Wilson said.
"I spoke to Steve recently when he was inevitably a bit down about being dropped and I told him I thought he had just about everything, which meant the ability to go on and make a name for himself.
"His biggest strength is his shot-stopping and there are not many who can kick with both feet like he can."
Phillips began the season as second choice to veteran keeper Mike Stowell, but an injury to the former Wolves glovesman gave Phillips his chance.
However, Stowell has since regained his place in The Robins side and helped the West Country club to seventh place in Division Two.
