The 18-year-old Welshman has been playing in the Ashton Gate club's reserves most of this season, but finally made his breakthrough into the first-team late on in the campaign.
Robins boss Danny Wilson told the Bristol City official website of the quality that Jones brings to squad and his hopes for the youngster to see more first-team action next season.
Wilson said: "Darren's strength is his strength. He is already physically capable of coping with Second Division football.
"He can be a bit over-zealous at times in certain aspects of his game, which he will have to temper down a bit.
"But you need aggression and he is a good defender who attacks the ball well. There is work to do on his distribution, but if he continues his current progress he will be knocking on the door next season."
