Crewe`s win at Plymouth on Tuesday put daylight between them and City, but Danny Wilson`s men would have been confident of beating Swindon.
Things looked good for City when Mark Robins headed them in front from close range on 48 minutes.
The visitors failed to add to their advantage and were made to pay when Sam Parkin (pictured) scored on 65 minutes.
Things could have been worse for Bristol, but they were able to breathe a huge sigh of relief when Andy Gurney`s free-kick smacked against the post.
