Manager Danny Wilson wants the journeyman shot stopper to continue vying for a first-team berth with Stephen Phillips, as well as developing the club's younger keepers and keeping his eye out for potential new signings in that department.
Robins chairman Steve Lansdown told the club's official website: "We feel Mike is still well capable of providing competition for Steve as goalkeepers tend to have longer careers that outfield players.
"But it was also felt important to have a goalkeeping coach.
"In the past duties have been shared by the likes of Mike Gibson and Len Bond, but Mike Stowell is ideally situated to take on the role.
"We hope he can pass on his experience and know-how to our young goalkeepers, while still being available to play if necessary."
In other news, former City youngsters Ben Cleverley, Dean Lindsay and James Pike have been handed a football life-line by Third Division Cheltenham Town.
