The 24-year-old has been used in a limited capacity by Robins boss Danny Wilson and the opportunity of playing first team football at The Reynolds Arena should boost his match fitness.
With discussions ongoing, the former Leeds United hit-man has been withdrawn from the reserve match against Manchester United at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening.
"We are currently talking to Darlington with a view to sending Lee on a month's loan, although I must stress nothing has been settled just yet," Wilson told the club's official website.
"The bottom line is Lee needs games right now and, with this in mind, we've already made Lee available to other clubs with a view to a loan move.
"After tonight's game against Manchester United, we have no reserve matches until the New Year, so it is particularly important that he gets some match action."
Meanwhile, the Ashton Gate club have signed teenage goalkeeper Scott Brown until the end of the season.
The 18-year-old joined the West Country outfit from League of Wales side Welshpool Town in October and the club are keen to take a closer look at the young custodian.
The former Wolves trainee has already appeared for the Robins reserves and is looked on as one for the future.
