It was Rushden's first game without Ian Talbot in charge after he left Nene Park to take control of Oldham leaving veteran defender Barry Hunter (pictured) to select the team.
Bristol City won the fixture with Leroy Lita scoring the only goal of the game at Ashton Gate.
Rushden failed to clear a Louis Carey cross and when Aaron Brown put the ball back into the danger zone Lita was on cue to head home with 29 minutes played.
City continued to dominate and Christian Roberts squandered a hat-trick of chances to increase the West Country side's lead.
Rushden attempted to get back into the game but Hunter's first game in charge was not only marred by defeat, but by a booking he collected with 25 minutes remaining for a foul on the Bristol City goal scorer.
