Robins boss Brian Tinnion has been keen to sign some custodial cover following the summer departures of Clint Davies and Jonathan Gould.
The West Country club have already taken a look at Aston Villa keeper Wayne Henderson, Scottish shot-stopper Colin Stewart and Australian custodian Michael Turnbull.
Deeney looks set to leave Meadow Lane before the end of the month after turning down the offer of a new contract with The Magpies.
The 22-year-old is currently on a week-to-week contract with the League Two side and has already spent time on trial with Championship club Crewe Alexandra.
He was also reportedly linked with a switch to Sheffield United, but Deeney has decided to take up the opportunity of winning a contract at Ashton Gate.
"If we are impressed, there is scope to sign him permanently," Tinnion told the club's official website.
"It's important we get good cover for Steve Phillips and Saul has a reputation as a very promising young keeper."
