Leaders Nottingham Forest suffered a shock 3-1 home defeat to third-from-bottom Leyton Orient on Saturday.
Luke Guttridge's 25th minute goal caused a flutter and an upset was definitely on the cards when Adam Chambers doubled his team's lead on the stroke of the interval.
Ian Breckin pulled a goal back just before the hour mark and a comeback appeared on for the hosts.
However those hopes were snuffed out once and for all by Wayne Corden (69).
Scott Murray's first minute goal saw Bristol City moved up to second in the league following a 1-0 win over struggling Millwall.
Oldham were pegged back by Brighton in a 1-1 draw at Boundary Park. Paul Warne had given John Sheridan's high-flyers an 18th minute lead, but Dean Hammond (61) levelled for the visitors.
Bournemouth moved out of the relegation places but were left counting the cost of a late goal which denied them victory at Gillingham.
Sam Vokes (38) had given The Cherries the lead, but they came undone three minutes into time added on at the end of the game when Andrew Crofts equalised.
Swansea moved into the play-off places following an emphatic win over Carlisle. Dennis Lawrence (8), Rory Fallon (15, 62), Andy Robinson (27) and Darren Pratley (59) were all on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win.
Dean Windass's 57th minute goal earned Bradford a 1-0 win over Chesterfield.
Cheltenham gained a much-needed 2-0 win over Rotherham, but remain in the relegation zone despite goals from Brian Wilson (64) and David Bird (90).
It was a good day for the strugglers, but bottom club Brentford remain rooted following a 1-0 defeat at Port Vale, for whom George Pilkington was the matchwinner three minutes from time.
Huddersfield's Danny Schofield (65) replied to Northampton's Joe Burnell (19) in a 1-1 draw in West Yorkshire.
Doncaster and Yeovil were scheduled to be in action, but the match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
