In the aftermath of their 4-1 defeat to Wolves, McInnes said that the victors' physicality 'spooked' his Robins side, something he says they never recovered from.
And the Scot stressed the importance of the physical battle they would face against Dave Jones' men, something he believes they stood up to well.
McInnes said: "We had to deal with a lot of stuff. Wednesday are a big side with a physical presence. There is no surprise with the style they play.
"If Sheffield Wednesday wanted to exploit us that way then I think we stood up to it in the main.
"We stood up to it when that has been classed as a weakness for us. We tried to get the ball down and play and we deserved to win."
Their three points, earned in dramatic fashion thanks to two late goals, was only City's second win since mid-September, but McInnes is not getting carried away in the build-up to their clash with Derby on Saturday.
"There is still improving to do for us to be totally confident of where our destiny is going to be," he said.
"The nature of the two goals we conceded suggested there is work to be done so we won't go overboard. We go into next Saturday on the back of a very good performance and a very good result."
