It is understood that a number of Championship sides have been scouting the 24-year-old Wales international after his impressive performances since the arrival of Sean O'Driscoll at Ashton Gate.
Despite O'Driscoll's obvious admiration for Nyatanga, the club have stated the need to reduce their wage bill following relegation.
And with the player's current deal due to expire in the summer, he could be set to leave Ashton Gate after more than 100 appearances for the Robins.
The centre-back joined Bristol City from Derby County in 2009. During his time at the Rams he also enjoyed successful loan spells at Sunderland and Barnsley.
Prior to Gareth Bale's debut for Wales, Nyatanga was the youngest senior international in the country's history and has become a regular in the international set-up, claiming 34 full caps since his debut in 2006.
Burnley, Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion are among the clubs believed to be chasing the ball-playing defender.
A spokesman for End Game, who represent the player, told Sky Sports: "Lewin will be considering his options once the season has finished."
