The Robins were due to fly to southern Africa for two weeks in early July, a trip which would see them take on two local sides in a three-team tournament.
Both matches were due to take place in the country's national stadium in Gaborone but significant delays to the redevelopment project meant the tournament had to be cancelled.
That move left the relegated side exploring the possibility of a similar trip next summer and making plans for friendlies closer to home in the build-up to the new season.
City owner Steve Lansdown told the Bristol Evening Post: "The Botswana government are investing a lot to bring all their facilities up to FIFA standards, and it was clear when I visited Gaborone this week that more time was needed to ensure the pitch at the National Stadium met these.
"It is very disappointing but I can only agree that in the interests of the tournament it is the right decision to postpone it until next year."
