Highlights from Vale Park as Britt Assombalonga scores from long range in Nottingham Forest's 2-0 win against Port Vale

Britt Assombalonga hit a cracking strike as Nottingham Forest beat Port Vale 2-0 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday.

New coach Philippe Montanier has won three consecutive games as Forest prepare for their opening Championship fixture against newcomers Burton on August 6.

Matt Mills headed his side into the lead in the 40th minute, firing in at the back post, before striker Assombalonga added a stunning second.

Vale goalkeeper Jak Alnwick had made a string of good saves to keep Forest from increasing their lead, but there was nothing he could do about the striker's effort, as he turned on the edge of the box and sent a dipping half-volley past the stopper and into the top corner.

Leicester started their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory over Oxford

It took 14 months for Assombalonga to return to action after suffering a knee injury in February 2015, and Montanier is sure the goal will boost his confidence ahead of the new season.

"He has worked very hard in pre-season. He has worked hard and it is important for him and his confidence, that goal," the manager told the Nottingham Post.

"He does work very hard in games and it was a great goal. It is always difficult for players to come back from injury but he always has a smile on his face and he performs with commitment during the week."
