The 25-year-old ace is out of contract at the end of the season and as yet has not been offered a new deal. Forest are cash-strapped and they would prefer to sell him rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer.
The former Columbus Crew man would like to stay at the City Ground, but he does not know what his situation with the club is.
"I've no idea what's going on," John told the Nottingham Post. "Forest haven't talked to me about a new contract and everything is in limbo.
"I need for Forest to be saying something so we can discuss my options. But there have been no offers yet.
"I would love to stay, but I don't know what will happen.
"I understand it is difficult because of the financial situation, but it would be nice to sit down and talk to the club.
"I'm enjoying it here and am desperate to do well. When I first came to the City Ground I had a few injuries, but I'm fully fit now and things are great."
John is the latest player at Forest to be linked with a move away as they try to ease their debts with both David Prutton and Jermaine Jenas reported to be sacrificed to bring much-needed revenue to the club.
