Lester's contract expires at the end of the season and is unsure whether he will be offered a fresh deal.
Like so many Nationwide League clubs, Forest are in the financial mire and may be unable to fund a new contract for Lester.
The 27-year-old has spent almost three years with the First Division outfit and is eager to stay in the East Midlands.
The former Grimsby ace is also playing a pivotal role in the club's promotion assault as one of the older heads in Forest's exciting young side.
Lester hopes his performances will persuade the Forest paymasters to extend his stay at the City Ground and feels promotion to The Premiership would boost his prospects of a fresh deal.
"No-one has spoken to me about my contract but we all know what the club are doing," said Lester.
"I want to stay but the club will offer contracts only to those people they want to keep.
"So the incentive for me is to keep playing well and, if we can keep up the promotion challenge, the better it will be for all of us.
"If we can get into The Premiership then that will help us all. That is where we all want to be."
