Things appeared to be going to plan for Paul Hart's men as they dominated the opening exchanges and moved ahead shortly after the 20 minute mark.
Irishman Andy Reid's twenty-yard free-kick took a wicked deflection off the unfortunate Alan Pouton to leave Danny Coyne stranded.
However, the promotion-chasing hosts were stunned just a minute before the break when Grimsby player-manager Paul Groves lead by example to haul his side level.
The veteran midfielder arrived late into the six-yard box to slide in a Darren Mansaram pull-back.
Three minutes after the interval the City Ground was silenced when Pouton atoned for his earlier misfortune, by driving home from 25 yards after a weak punch from Forest keeper Darren Ward.
The hosts piled forward in search of an equaliser, but were made to wait until the final minute when Scottish starlet Gareth Williams (pictured) pounced to fire home from five yards after good work from Marlon Harewood.
The point means neither side moves in Division One, with Forest staying fourth and Grimsby remaining rooted to the foot of the table.
