The Gills edged ahead of above their opponents in the table as goals from Patrick Agyemang and Danny Spiller cancelled out Nick Barmby's opener - his first for Forest.
Forest were also forced to play the closing stages with ten men after Alan Rodgers was given his marching orders.
The visitors moved ahead in the 27th minute and were good value for their lead when Barmby latched on to a knock-down from Garteh Taylor to fire home left-footed.
The goal roused Gillingham, however, and they were level seven minutes later when Agyemang (pictured) reacted quickest to fire home after Kevin James had been denied.
The hosts clinched all three points 20 minutes from time, Spiller was in the right place at the right time when the ball broke from a penalty-box scramble and made no mistake from close range.
