The former Wimbledon and Luton Town boss took charge at The City Ground in early February for the sacked Paul Hart.
His efforts to halt Forest's slide down the Division One table have seen the club take 16 points from ten matches - including a 2-0 home win to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
His labours have reportedly convinced the club's board to extend his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season, for another two years.
Following their win against The Railwaymen, Kinnear outlined his plans for strengthening his squad in the summer.
"No messing about, all that matters is getting into The Premiership," said Kinnear.
"I have written down a hit-list of players I would like to bring to this club and I believe I can get most of them, if not all, within the budget set down."
Kinnear was busy on transfer deadline day last Thursday bringing in new faces - one of them being midfielder Paul Evans.
The Welsh international initially joined Forest on loan from Bradford City last week but both clubs have now completed the formalities of a £25,000 move from Valley Parade over the weekend.
